Question: What could be the implications of over-promising and then having to bring a conversation to an abrupt end, due to the setting or time constraints?

Answer: This can have the same diminishing effect. How you articulate your offer of support to a student can be the starting point of a really positive helping journey for the student.

It may be that you have little time and/or the setting is an inappropriate place for support conversation to take place. Despite these circumstances it is still possible to respond to a student in a way which ensures that the student recognises you value them and their concerns.
