  • Poor personal hygiene
  • A dishevelled appearance
  • Regularly appearing to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be significant, particularly if this is out of character for the student
  • Some students are noticeably isolated, hanging about, usually alone, in the department or hall of residence with little sense of purpose
  • Others may be more active, but visibly anxious, perhaps spending long periods in the library, setting themselves unrealistic targets of what they can achieve
