An important aspect of listening is about taking time and not rushing the person talking about their experience. Patience requires that we sit quietly supporting the person to explore their situation at their own pace without pushing or intervening. This may at times include being silent. Silence enables the person to reflect, pause and refine what they are saying.

The skill is to use active listening skills just enough to support a person to talk but not too much to take over the process.
