Five skills for active listening include:

  1. Asking questions to support the person to talk
  2. Reflecting and summarizing the content of what is being said
  3. Being empathic
  4. Being patient and non-judgmental
  5. Paying attention to body language (both the distressed person and your own)

A combination of these skills will help you understand the person better and enable you to get a clearer grasp of their situation. We will consider each of these components separately.
