Talk to someone
If a student hasn't made friends yet, they can arrange to talk to a tutor, student union rep, or halls warden. Encourage them to see their GP or talk to a counsellor.
Keep regular contact with home
Encourage the student to keep in regular contact with friends and family at home and plan visits. But stress that they also need to give themselves a chance to settle in by not going home every weekend.
Suggest arranging for friends and family to visit the student at university.
Remind the student that other students will also feel like this.
Looking after oneself
Help the student to find ways to look after themselves and to keep their expectations realistic.
Trying to eat well and sleep enough may help them to feel better.
Tell the student about the Students' Union where they can get involved in clubs and societies.
Help the student to give themselves time to adjust and not rush into quick decisions.
Be supportive if the student does finally decide to leave university.
